A U.S. Postal service worker was mauled to death by a pack of five dogs in rural Florida over the weekend, authorities said. The deceased, identified as Pamela Jane Rock of Melrose, was attacked by dogs after her vehicle broke down, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said. The incident happened in the Interlachen Lake Estates area on Sunday.

61-year-old Pamela Jane Rock died at a hospital on Monday night, officials said, addressing a news conference on Tuesday. When the residents, including the dogs’ owner and other neighbours, heard the woman’s cries, they rushed to help her. Pamela was screaming for help as she lay on the ground, trying to fend off the dogs, the officials said.

“One of the neighbors even brought his firearm along and fired several shots into the air and to the ground in an attempt to disrupt the attack,” Putnam County Sheriff Chief Deputy Colonel Joseph Wells said at the presser.

The neighbours and the owner were successful in physically pulling off the dogs from the victim. When the officials arrived at the spot, the owner had pulled the dogs back on their property but Pamela was lying on the ground and was bleeding heavily, the sheriff’s office said.

The officials applied three tourniquets to control the blood flow of Pamela and immediately took her to a hospital.

“As we drove her, Pamela Rocks went into cardiac arrest and she died from her injuries the next day,”Colonel Joseph Wells said at the news conference. The postal worker’s niece claimed Rock had to have one arm amputated.

Animal control workers were called to the scene and took custody of the five dogs involved in the attack.

Meanwhile, the United States Postal Service expressed grief over the death of their employee and said it was “deeply saddened at the loss of our employee. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and her co-workers at this time.”

“Our hearts are with the victim and her family as they navigate through this tragic event,” Putnam County Sheriff H.D. DeLoach said. “It is imperative that dog owners take responsibility in keeping their animals in a secured location for their safety and those around.”

The officials said that the attack was still under investigation and there are chances that the owner could face charges.

As per the data released by the US Postal Service in June, more than 5,400 postal employees were attacked by dogs in the US in 2021. Florida topped the chart for dog bites with 201 incidents being reported last year.
